How to use this
Twenty places, each with its own page: what it is, what is actually there, whether it is free or ticketed, which day it shuts, and the mistake people make.
A good half of them cost nothing. The château courtyard, the cathedral, the memorial, the gardens, the quays and the rooftop bar on the Tour Bretagne are all free.
The ones people underrate
Trentemoult — a painted fishermen's village reached by a river shuttle that is ordinary public transport. The Butte Sainte-Anne — the best view of the Loire, free, and the one Jules Verne grew up with. The Île de Versailles — a Japanese garden on an island, fifteen minutes from the middle of town.
